Woods vary in hardness and durability. Some are so soft as to be easily damaged. Others are so hard they would dull or damage knives quickly. The woods primarily used are:
-
Cherry is a hardwood, meaning it comes from a deciduous tree called the black cherry, AKA American cherry. Its heartwood has a pale salmon color when freshly machined and ages to a beautifully warm reddish brown over time. The sapwood is a pale-yellow color and appears on the outer edge of dimensioned boards. It is quite nice to work with.
-
Maple is a hardwood called the sugar maple. Its heartwood has a reddish-brown color, while the sapwood can range from white to cream and can have golden undertones. Maple is harvested specifically for its sapwood rather than its heartwood. It is reasonably easy to work with, although, due to its high density, it is more difficult to work with hand tools than most other domestics. It machines well and finishes nicely.
-
Walnut is a hardwood known for making high-quality floors and Furniture. It gives a great deep brown appearance. Its hardness, durability, and stability make it suitable for indoor and outdoor furniture. It has many remarkable properties, which makes it unique from other hardwoods. Walnut is famous for its Light brown to dark chocolate color and contains deep brown streaks. Its straight grain pattern presents a fine appearance. It looks smooth even after finishing.
-
Purple Heart trees originate from the territories of Central and South America. The majority of all Purpleheart trees currently in existence are in the Amazon Basin. When freshly cut, the heartwood of purpleheart can be a dull grayish/purplish brown. Exposure to sunlight deepens the eggplant purple. With further age and exposure to UV light, the wood becomes a deep brown with a hint of purple. This color-shift can be slowed and minimized by using a UV inhibiting finish on the wood. The purple color can be restored by using a heat gun to warm the wood.
-
There are two distinct kinds of wood regarding limba wood, black limba wood and white wood limba. It seems like they both have the same two characteristics, except for the color. Limba wood is coarse in texture, straight grain, and has a mild odor while being work. Black Limba is dark yellow with straight black grains. While black limba wood looks bright yellow with straight and irregular grains, and availability of the wood is still relatively good and is sold at a mid-range price in the market, but more expensive for figured like black limba.
-
Birds Eye Maple is not a distinct species of maple but considered a growth/grain anomaly. Although rare exceptions exist, Birds Eye Maple is exclusively harvested from hard maple.
-
Padauk grows in tropical climates, although the geography changes from rain forest to dry, nearly treeless plains with each species. You will find padauk in India, Indochina, the South Pacific, West Africa, and even southern Florida Depending on the species, padauk's coarse-grained heartwood varies in color from a lustrous purple red to orange red. With age and exposure to sunlight, it turns deep maroon. Quartersawn wood features a pronounced ribbon stripe. Sapwood never reaches the market.
-
Sapele is a deep pinkish-red brown to a darker rusty brown color. It is an African hardwood of medium density that is often used as a substitute for South American Mahogany. It is easy to work with and strong, with a satiny texture, tight uniform grain, and consistent color. Sapele wood veneer will accept stains and finishes well which accentuate the grain's luster.
-
Has a conspicuous flecking that gives this wood its namesake. The wood itself is reddish-brown with gray or light brown rays which result in a lace pattern when quartersawn. This is due to the wide medullary rays seen when looking at the end grain.
-
Oak Oakwood comes in a wide variety of colors, from light beige to brown and red. The color of white oak wood is light brown, while the color of red oak wood is pinkish and reddish. As oakwood ages and is exposed to oxygen and ultraviolet light, it may darken slightly. Oakwood has a random texture and straight grain.
-
The Wenge is medium brown, sometimes with a reddish or yellowish hue, with black streaks. Upon application of a wood finish (particularly an oil finish) the wood can become black. However, unlike most other dark hardwoods, the heartwood of wenge can lighten (rather than darken) when exposed to sunlight.
